This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide to everything you need to know and how to find the best deals.
The Apple TV checks a lot of boxes and is undoubtably the best streaming device for Apple fans, but the main thing it lacks is affordability. Even Apple’s cheaper HD model is a hard sell at its usual $149 MSRP, though its price has been slashed to just $79 today at Walmart. This is the lowest we have ever seen the Apple TV HD go, making it worth considering if you’ve been on the fence until now.
The Apple TV HD is a plug-and-play solution for easy streaming access on your existing TV. It connects via HDMI and offers 1080p HD streaming with support for Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound. It provides the level of user experience you’d expect from an Apple product, plus convenient tie-ins with your Apple ID, iTunes purchase history, and Apple services such as Apple TV Plus and Apple Fitness Plus. Ultimately, you’re likely to enjoy using an Apple TV more than a device from a competitor and the $70 discount helps drop its price to something a little closer to the rest of the streaming pack.
In our Apple TV HD review from 2021, CNET’s Eli Blumenthal questioned why this device still exists at its $149 retail price. Today’s discount sure helps to make the Apple TV HD a more attractive option, but other criticisms around its lack of 4K support and aging processor still stand. If you’re looking to spend as little as possible on an Apple TV deal this Prime Day season, though, this discount from Walmart’s Rollbacks and More sale may well be the best option we see.
